At least that’s what the majority of couples think. “Open relationships” are something like what we call “white marriage” – the couple cohabits, but at the same time agrees that they can have a parallel relationship: to flirt or even have sex with people other than their partner.

For the purposes of the research, American Professor Amy Moores, director of research and evaluation of social sciences at the “College of Engineering” of Purdue University, examined the data collected by Google Trends between January 2006 and December 2015.

Please note that Google Trends is the platform of Google’s search engine, which stores what users are looking for.

For Professor Moores, it is not surprising that in a large percentage, the reason for recording this trend is due to her appearance on television.

“There are screenings of TV series at peak times where couples are presented in open-ended relationships. It’s hard to say if people are looking for this information on Google because they’re just curious about what they see on the small screen, or because they’re really interested in trying it out themselves. However, this issue is definitely on their minds”, underlines the American professor.

Also, non-monogamous relationships are widely misunderstood and stigmatized. “There is no scientific evidence to suggest that people cannot love or even have sex with more than one person… In fact, some of my recent work compared the quality of relationships based on trust, satisfaction and passion between people in monogamous and non-monogamous relationships and I found no differences”, says Professor Moores. She even predicts that consensual non-monogamous relationships will become more common. “Already, I think, many couples have open relationships, or have been wavering on the subject for years, but remain closed due to fear of stigmatization and discrimination,” he adds.
