According to a study in heterosexual couples from five different countries on the average duration of sex, vaginal intercourse lasts about 5.4 minutes before the man ejaculated. From three to 13 minutes is considered a normal duration for vaginal sex, according to experts who conducted a relevant research in 2005, while a recent study of 2020 claims that the average woman needs 13.41 minutes to reach orgasm during sex with a sexual partner, while she also needs actions beyond penetration.

On average, women and men in a relationship report that preliminaries last 11 and 13 minutes respectively, according to a study in heterosexual couples. In particular, the men tended to report that the foreplay lasted less than the duration reported by the women, but both sexes claimed that the sex lasted about seven minutes.

The exception to this rule may concern same-sex relationships between women: A 2014 study found that the average time of sex between women in same-sex relationships was 35-40 minutes, compared to 15-30 minutes in gender relations and relationships between men. Almost 20% of women in same-sex relationships reported that the sexual act lasted at least an hour.

Is there an ideal duration in sex?

In fact, there is no ideal duration in sex, other than what makes everyone feel better. Experts argue that on average seven to 13 minutes is a “desirable” duration for vaginal sex, with one to two minutes considered “very little”, three to seven minutes considered “sufficient time” and 10 to 30 minutes considered “very”.

However, the numbers vary from research to research: In a 2010 study of 300 heterosexual married couples, women wanted vaginal sex to last an average of 16 minutes. A 2019 Twitter poll involving 2,380 people on the time of termination of penetration found that 61% wanted penetration to last 5-10 minutes, compared to 26% who said they want it to take more than 11 minutes.

Understandably, there are various opinions about what is considered ideal, with the result that there is no agreement on whether longer sex is better or worse. Another poll of 819 people with the question “Are you ever bored during the penetration or do you think you want it to end?” 82% of the participants answered positively. In contrast, in a previous survey in 2010, 43% of married women surveyed responded that they wanted vaginal sex to last longer, 39% that they felt good with the current duration and only 18% that they wanted it to last less.

In conclusion, men and women in a relationship want the approximately 18-19 minutes of sexual intercourse to be related to something beyond meaningful sexual intercourse, as concluded by a 2004 study in heterosexual couples.
